The child labour baseline survey (ILO,2009), conducted by UBOS in Rakai, Mbale and Wakiso, revealed that about 3% of children 5-17 years in the sampled households of Wakiso District had never attended school because they are either too young, disabled, had no school requirements or school was too far which makes them vulnerable to child labour. Child trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) are some of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Wakiso district but are considered hidden, complex and corrosive. Children are also engaged in hazardous work in form of domestic helpers, brick layers, general labourers, construction labourers, sand mining, stone quarrying, forestry undertaking tree planting, tree cutting, and in industries. CSEC pre disposes children to HIV/AIDS, pregnancies and other STDs.

UYDEL is currently implementing a two year project (February 2010 to 31st January 2011) entitled "Prevention and withdrawal of children engaged in Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSEC), victims of trafficking and other Worst Forms of Child Labour in Nangabo, Nabweru and Busukuma sub counties, Wakiso District" with financial support from ILO-IPEC.The development objective of this project is to contribute to the elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) in Uganda. The involvement of the district and community through making use of existing structures of Cialis OTC or child protection or when not available or inactive establishment of community child labour committees (CCLCs), peer educators, strong referral system and sensitisation campaigns shall lead to creation of child labour free zones in the project areas.

Project Strategies

1. Prevention of children from engaging in child labour Identification of children at risk and children engaged in WFCL; Sensitization and Awareness raising activities, and Peer Education.

2. Withdrawal and Rehabilitation of children engaged in child labour Provision of comprehensive psycho social counselling for the ex child labourers, talent identification and recreation services, life skills building sessions, medical care, education, referral of beneficiaries, vocational skills training, and resettlement. Each identified child for withdrawal, rehabilitation and integration has his/her own file where assessments regarding recruitment in-take form, identification reports, home visit reports, case study, social workers reports on counselling, psychosocial support, resettlement plan and other services provided are recorded. The social workers prepare resettlement and action plans for each child to facilitate the process of re-integration with their families and communities.

3. Social Protection: Measures Income Generating Activities for 75 families, Savings and micro credit development, Linking Families to existing social protection mechanisms.
